HOW SUSTAINABLE A COMPANY IS CAN USUALLY ONLY BE SAYED FOR THE PRESENT OR THE PAST - CAN'T IT?

If a company wants to present itself as particularly sustainable today, it has certification options from different providers at its disposal. In all cases, however, this is an assessment of the status quo or past measures. Furthermore, this type of analysis is usually characterized by a passive behavior towards the environment, eg in the form of saved energy or other resources or the reduction of emissions. The active contribution, for example the (successful) research and development of technologies that have a positive impact on our environment, is rarely considered, if at all.

Analyzing a company's patent portfolio makes it possible for the first time to measure a company's active contribution, i.e. the contribution that a company is able to make in relation to new technologies, processes, materials or formulations. The patents and their value reflect the result of R&D expenses. Since the profits from this can usually only be realized later, patents are also ideally suited as an early indicator.

CUI BONO - WHO USE IT?

For some years now, companies in the financial sector have had increasing requirements to invest primarily in companies that operate particularly sustainably under the heading "Responsible Investing". In the case of sustainable investments, the abbreviation ESG is used for the three sustainability criteria – after the English terms Environment (E), Social (S), Governance (G). The ESG approach has become the standard in the financial sector to define sustainable investments. The most important "E" (environment) part can be mapped well in a patent portfolio - absolutely objective and not manipulable.

In 2015, the United Nations adopted the 17 sustainability goals (Sustainable Development Goals - SDG) as overarching key goals for sustainable management. Accordingly, the 17 SDGs are a very concrete model. These sustainability goals can also be mapped - at least for the most part - via a patent portfolio, ie you can see specifically which of these sustainability goals the company contributes to with its innovation plan.

GOALS FOR COMPANIES

Find out how sustainable your industry is, where you are in the sustainability competition and where there is potential. Sustainable management does not have to be more expensive and uneconomical or even regressive, on the contrary: Our own studies have surprisingly shown that sustainable patents are even more valuable on average and their value increases comparatively faster. A clear indication of innovation potential.

HOW DOES THIS WORK?

With our well-established procedures for patent valuation, we can assign a monetary value to all patents in the world. With a special classification scheme, we can now filter out those who make a special direct sustainable contribution, enable sustainability ("Enabler") or support ("Supporter"). We set the values of these sustainable patents in relation to the overall portfolio value. The result is a "Sustainability Innovation Indicator" (0-100%).

When mapping the different sustainability goals of the UN (17 UN SDG), it is even possible to create a specific SDG sustainability profile for each company. This can be set in relation to the industry average or to specific previous years in order to draw comparisons and identify trends.

SUSTAINABILITY ANALYSIS USING PATENTS

SERVICE OFFER

On your behalf, we create ESG indicators (Environment, Social & Governance, with a focus on environment) and SDG profiles (Sustainable Development Goals) for individual companies (our own or third-party), industries, countries, states, company sizes, and put them in relation to each other or compare them to the past. We provide the analyzes in the form of extensive reports and visualizations.  We also issue certificates for individual companies. You can see examples below.

CERTIFICATES

Create your individual sustainability certificate for yourself/your company/your interest group based on your patent portfolio. See your ESG indicator compared to the industry average and your individual SGD profile.

Share your active sustainability successes  with shareholders, stakeholders and customers, e.g. for annual reports, statements of accounts, rating agencies etc.
